Forklift operator licence: process, providers and fast-track course
Five steps to your forklift operator licence
Anyone who wants to obtain a forklift operator licence usually goes through the same structured process - regardless of whether the course is taken with TUV, Dekra, a manufacturer academy or a regional training provider:
Step 1 - Check the requirements Minimum age 18, medical fitness (vision and hearing), and an occupational medical examination if required. Anyone who already has experience with industrial trucks should check in advance whether a one-day course is an option.
Step 2 - Choose a provider and course format Depending on prior knowledge, time frame and budget, choose between a standard course (2 days), a one-day course (1 day, for experienced operators) and in-house training (group). Weigh nationwide providers against regional ones.
Step 3 - Register and submit documents Register directly with the provider, usually online or by phone. Documents required: ID card, a certificate of occupational medical examination if applicable, and if applicable a declaration from the employer that it will cover the costs or proof of public funding for the course.
Step 4 - Complete the course Theoretical and practical training in line with applicable Czech safety rules and CSN EN standards. Completed with a two-part examination (theory + practice).
Step 5 - Authorisation at the company After passing the exam, the employer issues a written authorisation. Without this formal authorisation, the employee may not operate the forklift, even with an operator licence.
Provider types compared
There are four main types of training providers offering forklift operator licence courses:
Nationwide certification bodies (Dekra, TUV and their partners) Advantage: high profile, widely accepted certificate, course network throughout the Czech Republic. Disadvantage: prices tend to be higher, less flexibility for individual solutions.
Manufacturer academies (Jungheinrich Akademie, Still Academy, Linde Training Center) Advantage: machine-specific knowledge, ideal if you run your own fleet from that manufacturer. Disadvantage: limited locations, courses often focused on the manufacturer's own truck types.
Regional training providers (regional training centres, accredited training centres, chambers of commerce) Advantage: courses close by, often lower prices, more flexible course times. Disadvantage: quality varies by provider.
In-house training at the employer Advantage: course content adapted to site-specific conditions, no travel. Disadvantage: minimum group size required (typically 6-10 people), own practice area needed.
Fast-track or standard course: which suits whom?
One-day course (fast-track, 1 day) Suitable for: people with at least 1-2 years of practical experience with forklifts. Not suitable for: beginners without prior experience - covering the theory in one day is hardly possible without basic knowledge. Cost: depends on the provider.
Standard course (2 days) Suitable for: all beginners, career changers and people without formal proof of qualification. Schedule: day 1 theory + first practical exercises, day 2 practical training + final exam. Cost: approx. 100-320 euros as a guide.
Multi-day course (3-5 days, incl. level 2) Suitable for: people who want to obtain a specialist qualification for reach trucks, side loaders or telehandlers straight away. Cost: depends on the provider; for example, a W1 forklift course combined with a fixed telehandler approx. 260 euros excl. VAT.
Finding a provider near you: selection checklist
This checklist helps you assess course providers:
- Certification: Does the provider hold the necessary accreditation and authorisation to train forklift operators?
- Practical share: How many hours of practical exercises are included? A practical share of at least 50 % is recommended.
- Truck types: Is training done on the truck type used at your site?
- Group size: How many participants per course? Smaller groups (4-8 people) allow more individual practice time.
- Course times: Day or evening courses? Flexibility for shift workers?
- What the price includes: Are exam fee, course materials and issue of the operator licence included?
Registration and required documents
When registering for a forklift operator course, the following documents are usually required:
- Valid ID card or passport
- Certificate of occupational medical examination (if required by the employer)
- Employer's declaration of cost coverage (if funded by the employer)
- Proof of public funding (for a subsidised course)
- If applicable, proof of prior knowledge (when registering for a one-day course)
Registration is usually done via online form, phone or e-mail. Many providers have short waiting lists - register planned training in good time.
FAQs: forklift operator licence
Where can I get a forklift operator licence?
Courses are offered throughout the Czech Republic by Dekra, TUV, Jungheinrich Akademie, Still Academy, regional training providers and accredited training centres, among others. Course finder portals and the websites of these providers allow you to search by location.
Can I get a forklift operator licence in one day?
Yes - provided the provider offers a one-day course and your prior knowledge is sufficient. For beginners without experience, we recommend the 2-day standard course.
Can the company run the training in-house?
Yes, provided an authorised external training provider delivers the training and the company provides a suitable practice area and appropriate trucks. An in-house course is cost-effective for groups of 6-10 people or more.
What do I need to bring when registering?
ID card, a certificate of occupational medical examination if applicable and - depending on the funding route - the employer's declaration of cost coverage or proof of public funding. For one-day courses, prior knowledge sometimes has to be proven.
