Renting a truck-mounted or trailer-mounted platform: which suits your job?

Anyone who wants to rent an aerial work platform first thinks of working height and price. Yet one question is just as decisive: how does the machine get to the site - and how quickly is it ready for use there? Truck-mounted platforms and trailer-mounted platforms solve the same basic problem in two fundamentally different ways. Which option is the better choice for your specific case depends on factors that are often overlooked in consultations.

This article explains both machine types in objective technical terms, names their real strengths - and shows when each solution makes sense.

Truck-mounted platform: mobility as a system

A truck-mounted platform is not an attachment - it is a fully integrated system of transport vehicle and lifting platform. The decisive difference from a delivered scissor lift or the transport of an articulating boom lift is that the vehicle itself carries and positions the platform. As soon as the truck is parked, set-up begins - and it often takes only a few minutes.

Technical classification

In the Luibl rental fleet, truck-mounted platforms are available in two classes:

  • Up to 3.5 t: can be driven with a standard driving licence under Czech rules, from 20 m working height, small turning circle
  • Large units up to 57 m working height: for facade work, tree care along main roads, municipal services; brands Ruthmann and Palfinger, all units with periodic inspection under Government Regulation No. 378/2001 Coll.

The hydraulic outriggers deploy automatically. That means: no manual levelling, no levelling with wedges, no loss of time. If you are working on three detached houses in one street, you move the truck, set the outriggers, extend - done. The time advantage on moving job sites is real and measurable.

Typical applications

  • Tree care and vegetation trimming along roads and paths
  • Maintenance and cleaning of street lighting and traffic signs
  • Facade painting and plastering across several properties
  • Roof edge inspection and lightning protection work in industrial areas
  • Municipal services with changing locations

Trailer-mounted platform: the argument against dead weight

The trailer-mounted platform has a structural advantage over the truck-mounted platform: the towing vehicle remains free. Anyone who parks the platform on a site in the morning and then organises material with a car or small van has no idle time due to a tied-up truck.

Technical classification

Trailer-mounted platforms are towed with a car tow bar. Their decisive parameter is not the working height - it is the weight. Typical units range from under 750 kg (so they can be towed without a higher licence category) to approx. 3,500 kg. The low dead weight protects sensitive surfaces: driveways, lawns, paving slabs. Many models have an electric mover that allows precise manoeuvring in tight spaces without a towing vehicle.

Typical applications

  • Facade work on individual properties with sensitive surroundings
  • Gutter cleaning and minor plumbing work
  • Maintenance work in courtyards and narrow accesses
  • Trade businesses that also use their towing vehicle to transport material
  • Jobs on unpaved or sensitive ground (garden, lawn, historic paving)

Practical example: painting company in a residential estate

A painting company has been contracted to paint seven detached houses in a new housing development within two weeks. All properties lie within a radius of 800 metres. Every day the company drives a small van carrying paint, scaffolding material and tools.

Scenario A: truck-mounted platform

The truck is at the first house at 7 a.m. Set-up time: under 10 minutes. After the work is finished, stowing, relocating and setting up again takes approx. 15 minutes per move. Across seven properties this adds up to around 90 minutes of logistics. The van operates independently. Conclusion: high mobility, little lost time, a clear separation between access at height and material transport.

Scenario B: trailer-mounted platform

The trailer-mounted platform is unhitched in the morning and stays at the property during the day. The van is free to transport materials. Advantage: if a property is worked on over several days, there are no changeover costs. Disadvantage: when properties change daily, the platform has to be collected, transported and parked every morning - which costs time if no second driver is available.

The result:

With rapidly changing locations and enough vehicle crew, the truck comes out ahead. If a property is worked on over several days and the van is more important as a material carrier than the flexibility of the platform, the trailer-mounted platform wins.

Safety: what applies to both types of equipment

Whether you rent a truck-mounted platform or a trailer-mounted platform: both machines are subject to the same legal requirements. All machines from the Luibl rental fleet undergo the prescribed periodic inspection under Government Regulation No. 378/2001 Coll. Planning and operation are also based on CSN EN 280 (design calculation requirements for mobile aerial work platforms).

For operators: persons operating aerial work platforms must demonstrably hold the required operator qualification under the applicable occupational safety rules. The internationally recognised PAL Card (IPAF) is now standard for many clients and operators. Luibl provides an operator briefing on handover of the machine.

The most important operational safety points include:

  • PPE required: in the basket, wearing a fall-arrest harness and clipping on to the designated anchor point is mandatory - even for short jobs
  • Wind load: from wind force 6 (approx. 12 m/s) most platforms must be taken out of operation; the manufacturer's operating manual defines the exact limits for each model
  • Ground: check the load-bearing capacity of the ground before use, especially with trailer-mounted platforms on private property
  • Danger zones: keep a safe distance from overhead power lines in line with applicable Czech safety rules and CSN EN standards (at least 1 m for low voltage, more for high and extra-high voltage)

Which platform suits your job? We will advise you.

Choosing between a truck-mounted platform and a trailer-mounted platform is not just a question of budget - it is a question of logistics, ground conditions, operator structure and project duration. Choose the wrong machine and you pay twice: once for the rental and again in lost time. Luibl gives you specific advice - not by price list, but by job profile. We find the right machine, deliver it by low-loader from Passau throughout the Czech Republic and are available to answer your questions during the rental.
